For the 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun, the NSC has approved 32 sports.

By formally adopting a structured cap of 32 disciplines, the National Council on disciplines has made a significant step toward improving the 2024 National Sports Festival.
After considering the National Sports Commission’s careful memorandum, the council decided to make this judgment at an Extraordinary Council meeting on Wednesday, April 17, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to a statement from NSC Director General Bukola Olopade, the 32 sports would consist of 27 required events and up to five optional events that the host state will choose.

The Council reiterated during this meeting that the decision is in accordance with Rule 11 of the general rules and regulations for the 2024 National Sports Festival. This regulation was first created in 2019 during a previous Extraordinary Council in Benin City.

Based on historical participation data from previous festivals, the popularity of these sports in Nigeria’s 36 states and Federal Capital Territory, and the nation’s performance in these sports internationally, the Council has selected the list of mandatory sports.

Athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, cycling, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, karate, kickboxing, kung-fu, para-athletics, para-powerlifting, para-table tennis, scrabble, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling are among the 27 mandatory sports that constitute Nigeria’s top competitive and developmental priorities.

Additionally, in order to complete the 32-sport schedule, the host state has the authority to select up to five events from a pool of 25 optional sports.

Be aware that from May 18 to 30, Abeokuta, Ogun State, will host the 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games.
