The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has dismissed an online report by human rights activist Mr. Okoye Chuka Peter of the Centre for Human Rights Advocacy and Wholesome Society (CEHRAWS), titled “FRSC’s Ubakala Mobile Court: Where justice is missing but fines are not,” labeling it as false and misleading.
In a statement by J.K. Igbonekwu, the Public Education Officer of the Abia State Sector Command, the FRSC denied accusations of imposing arbitrary fines or overstepping its legal authority.
The Corps described the claims as an intentional attempt to damage its reputation and discredit the operations of its legally constituted Mobile Court in Ubakala, Abia State.
According to the statement, all proceedings at the Ubakala Mobile Court are conducted lawfully, with offenders informed of their rights, charges clearly explained, and opportunities provided for them to be heard before any judgment is made.
The FRSC emphasized that the court is not solely operated by its personnel, clarifying that it includes a Magistrate assigned by the Abia State judiciary, court officials, a prosecuting lawyer from the FRSC, marshals, and police officers to maintain order.
Rejecting the allegations as capable of misleading the public and undermining progress in road safety, the Corps noted that it has documentary and video evidence to counter the claims. It also revealed plans to take legal action against the publication and its sponsors.
