On Tuesday, the administration of Federal University Oye Ekiti in Ekiti State refuted rumors and hints that Prof. Abayomi Fasina, the university’s vice chancellor, had been suspended, calling the claims untrue and an attempt to mislead the public.
According to a statement released by the university’s public relations officer, Foluso Ogunmodede, in Ado Ekiti, Fasina, who on Monday took a six-month accumulated annual and research leave, will continue to serve as the substantive VC until February of the following year, at which point he will hand over to a successor after his tenure is up.
At its 7th Emergency Meeting on April 14, the University Governing Council approved 126 working days of Fasina’s accrued Annual and Research Leave, out of the 288 working days of leave he had requested, Ogunmodede explained.
“He suggested that two of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors act in his place rather than taking his place while he is away conducting more academic research. Prof. Olubunmi Samuel Shittu, the most senior DVC among them, was selected by the council to serve as Acting VC rather than substantive VC.A portion of the public has been misinformed and misled by the egregious lies, malicious misrepresentations, and blackmail regarding the true position of the university’s VC, which have been brought to the attention of the university’s management, it said.
Therefore, the following facts must be stated categorically in order to inform the public of the present events at the university: Until his term ends in February 2026, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina will continue to serve as FUOYE’s substantive VC.
“The VC is legally entitled to his accrued Annual and Research Leave as a learned scholar, and he is free to decide whether to apply for it. On Monday, April 14, 2025, he made the decision to request his leave. In its wisdom, the council only gave Fasina 126 days while he requested 288 days.
“Deliberate manipulation of the facts, cooking up lies that never existed and spreading the same, thereby misleading the innocent public for malicious reasons just to disparage the person of the substantive VC, Prof. Fasina” was what the university administration criticized.
The public was instructed by the university administration to disregard and discard any of the false information being shared by critics and their associates regarding events at FUOYE.
However, it stated that if the critics did not stop misleading the public, the institution would not think twice about pursuing legal action against them.
