According to Umar Bago, the governor of Niger State, preachers in the state are required to submit their sermons for approval before sharing them with their congregation.
This is what Governor Bago said on Sunday in response to inquiries during a TVC interview.
Additionally, he clarified certain parts of the law that aim to control preaching in the state.
Not that I outlawed evangelism. It is customary for everyone attending the sermon on Friday to bring their scriptures for review. This is carried out even in Saudi Arabia.
“We cannot say that because you have been given the chance to be a cleric, you will preach anti-government and anti-people gospels and you believe it to be normal,” he said.
The governor responded that it was in that direction when asked if it was due to fear of indoctrination.
“We would like to be able to see and hear what they are preaching.” The Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), the police, and the military are among the security agencies with which we are collaborating,” he continued.
The development has caused controversy since it was first made public earlier this month.
Umar Farooq, the Director General of Niger State Religious Affairs, had stated that preachers had two months to acquire their licenses and that anyone wishing to preach in Niger had to do so.Indeed, preaching has been outlawed by the state government. Between now and the following two months, any preacher who wishes to preach must obtain a license.
