In Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, ten female teams from throughout Nigeria are competing for honors in the first Governor Douye Diri Women Pre-season Football Tournament. The competition, which aims to get the clubs ready for the new season, will put the ten teams—eight of which are from the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) and two of which are non-league—to the testThe first game between Bayelsa Queens and Delta Queens yesterday marked the start of the preseason tournament, which is set to conclude on October 25. The competition got off to a strong start when Bayelsa Queens defeated Delta Queens 1-0 in the opening game, which was contested at the Government House field. The competition would be divided into two groups, “A” and “B,” each consisting of five teams, based on the draws. The teams in group B are Bayelsa Princesses FC, FC Robo, Abia Angels FC, Edo Queens FC, and Heartland Queens FC of Owerri, while the hosts in group A are Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa, Delta Queens FC, Rivers Angels FC, Imo Strikers FC, and Nasarawa Amazons.
