Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and other former PDP members have been praised by Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo for their recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement provided to Naija News by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Friday, April 25, 2025, Governor Okpebholo stated that the political change is indicative of the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s political landscape.
He pointed out that the desire to better serve one’s constituency and land a more significant role in the advancement of the country frequently motivates such moves.
In light of the defections in Delta State, Governor Okpebholo noted that the APC now has a stronger hold on the South-South geopolitical zone.
Governor Okpebholo expressed hope for the APC’s future in the area and claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection in 2027 is quite likely.
“He expressed optimism for continued cooperation between Edo and Delta States to advance the South-South region, and wished Governor Oborevwori and the former Delta PDP members well in their future endeavors,” the release reads.
Edo State’s commitment to upholding close ties with neighboring states in order to accomplish common goals was reaffirmed by Governor Okpebholo.
He said that the APC now has a strong presence in the South-South as a result of these notable defections in Delta State, which he thinks would draw more federal attention to the area.
With the APC currently in control of three significant states, Governor Okpebholo also voiced confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection in 2027 is assured, especially in the South-South.
Governor Okpebholo suggested that minority States, especially in the South-South, will no longer be marginalized, noting that with three of the six states now under APC control, the region is well-positioned to negotiate favourable outcomes.
“He also expressed optimism that Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom may soon join the APC, further strengthening the party’s influence in the South-South.
“He reiterated his satisfaction that President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid is now secure, stating that as the majority party in the South-South, the APC will deliver the region in the upcoming elections in 2027.”
