Controversial Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has weighed in on the US government’s recent, permanent revocation of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka’s visa. Soyinka himself announced the revocation on Tuesday at Freedom Park, Lagos, stating he was unaware of any reason for the action.
In a reaction posted on his official Facebook page, Gumi suggested the move was an attempt by the US to silence voices of opposition. He drew a direct parallel to his own experience, writing, “It reminds me of my Saudi visa revoke for no offence beside freedom of speech.”
He concluded with a witty dismissal of the alleged censorship attempt: “Poor them. You can’t silence those who don’t need you to survive.”
