Despite having contributed to the election of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai says he will not remain silent if the government is failing Nigerians.
Speaking on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, El-Rufai stated that he should not ignore problems when they arise because he helped Tinubu rise to power.
Should I not criticize Asiwaju because I helped bring him to power if his government has failed, if he is not acting in the way we expected him to, if he is not acting in the best interests of Nigerians? “Is that the current reasoning in Nigeria?” he inquired.
The former minister emphasized that the people, not private citizens, are the reason government exists.
“I have the right to disagree or criticize, even if my father or son is president or governor and he is acting improperly. Has Nigeria turned into that? where the truth can no longer be spoken?” he asked.
The former governor said that he was a mentor to many people, including Uba Sani, the current governor of Kaduna. However, he added that loyalty to people shouldn’t stop him from speaking out.
Being able to mentor and elevate numerous individuals to greatness is my greatest life accomplishment. But just because I helped get someone there, I won’t remain silent when they go off course or do something wrong,” he said.
El-Rufai also gave an explanation for his decision to cut off close ties with some of his political associates.
“I move on after I quit a job. I never return. I never give you a call. You can give me a call and I’ll answer any questions you may have about what happened or offer advice. I don’t, aside from that,” he stated.
