In the Adamawa Assembly, a bill to improve the lot of the underprivileged has reached the committee stage.

In the Adamawa State House of Assembly, a bill to formalize government actions to enhance the lives of the weak and impoverished has advanced to the committee stage.

The majority leader, Kate Mamuno, is sponsoring the Adamawa State Social Protection Draft Bill at the Assembly. It is anticipated that this bill would result in a law that will significantly improve the lives of the state’s impoverished and other vulnerable citizens.

Following the parliamentarians’ first and second readings, Speaker Mathiya Wesley committed the bill to the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, which has two weeks to provide a report.

During a week-long conference in Abuja last month, stakeholders approved the bill, which was created by the Supporting Sustainable Social Protection, Participation and Economic Resilience in Northeast Nigeria project, which GIZ implemented with funding from the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The bill’s sponsor clarified during the first two readings in the Adamawa State House of Assembly that the goal of the measure is to establish a legislative framework for the creation, control, and execution of social protection initiatives in Adamawa State.Leading the discussion of the bill’s general principles, Kate Mamuno emphasized that the bill is intended to ensure the welfare of all citizens, with special attention to the weak and impoverished, given that Adamawa State is confronted with a number of socioeconomic issues, such as unemployment, poverty, insecurity, displacement, natural disasters, and numerous social injustices. According to her, the difficulties have left the majority of people vulnerable, hungry, and deprived under administrations lacking a complete legal framework for social protection, leading to disjointed actions that fall short in addressing chronic issues. The foundation of social protection is the government’s fundamental duty to ensure the well-being of its citizens. She clarified that the measure offers a legislative framework for the planning, coordinating, and carrying out of social protection initiatives within the state.
