A tragic boat accident in Kojiyo village, Goronyo Local Government Area, Sokoto State, on Sunday is thought to have killed at least 30 traders, including women.
According to reports, the victims were traveling to the weekly Goronyo market when their boat, which was loaded with both people and cargo, overturned at 1:30 p.m.Local sources claim that the traders were from the nearby local government areas of Gada and Goronyo.
According to Hon. Zubairu Yari, Goronyo LGA, four people were saved alive.
Although he acknowledged that the boat was overcrowded, he said it was impossible to confirm the precise number of people on board.
The situation is difficult because of the high water flow from Goronyo Dam, which is being released to prevent overflow, but rescue efforts are still underway,” he said.
He went on to say that requests have been made to neighboring communities to help find the victims’ bodies, with the hope that some will be found today.
Overloading and poor road accessibility, which force many residents to rely on water transportation, were blamed by the chairman for the incident.
