The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State, through Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Mutiu Agboke, urged political parties on Tuesday to hold peaceful and transparent primaries for the upcoming 2026 governorship election.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Osogbo, Dr. Agboke stressed the importance of continuous engagement to ensure compliance with the election timetable. He noted that the timetable mandates parties to conduct their primaries between November 24 and December 15, 2025.
The REC emphasized the need for parties to prioritize internal democracy to minimize friction and pre-election disputes. He warned that campaign activities have not officially begun, citing the Electoral Act which allows campaigning only 150 days before the election.
Dr. Agboke appealed for cooperation, stating that INEC alone cannot deliver a successful poll. He expressed concern over issues like party members not knowing their logos and the destructive influence of vote buying, urging parties to intensify voter education. He also reported that 151,593 residents have completed their continuous voter registration in the state as of October 24, 2025.
In response, Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, assured stakeholders of electorate safety and promised that the police would curb electoral vices. Separately, Osun IPAC Chairman, Pastor Victor Akande, called for adherence to the rule of law and peaceful primaries, while also alleging that some parties have already begun illegal campaigns.
