The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Governor Hope Uzodinma to publicly disclose the total cost of constructing the Assumpta single-lane interchange flyover and the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Center (EIICC), both of which were commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his recent visit to the state.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the party argued that transparency demands the government reveal how much was spent on the projects. The PDP described the commissioning as another sign of what it alleged to be the corrupt practices of the Uzodinma administration.
According to the statement, the state’s Public Procurement Bureau has been rendered ineffective, while the governor allegedly assumes sole authority over contract appropriation, initiation, and procurement. The party accused Uzodinma of deliberately concealing financial details to cover what it termed monumental corruption and of treating governance like a private business.
Obiaku said the events around the commissioning amounted to a fanfare designed to mask corruption, even as Imo residents grapple with hardship, decaying schools and health facilities, and neglected roads. He condemned the government for spending billions on “a few showpiece edifices” while critical infrastructure, particularly urban and rural roads, remains in dire condition.
The PDP spokesperson highlighted examples of neglected roads, including Umuguma Road, despite its importance to a rapidly growing suburb with a federal housing estate. He also cited roads leading to the Ahiajoku Convention Centre and Saga Suites in New Owerri, as well as the Nekede–Ihiagwa Road linking the Federal Polytechnic Nekede and FUTO, describing them as impassable and dangerous.
The party criticized the state government for allegedly prioritizing hosting ceremonies and showcasing projects without accountability, rather than addressing the broader infrastructural collapse across Owerri and other communities. It challenged the government to publish the actual costs of the flyover and conference centre, warning that it would independently release its findings if the government failed to do so.
