In observance of the yearly Isese Day celebration, Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has announced Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a day off for public employees.
On Monday, August 18, the government reaffirmed its commitment to preserving indigenous customs and fostering intercultural harmony in the state.
In Nigeria, particularly in the Southwest, Isese Day, which honors the Yoruba traditional religion and heritage, has become a significant cultural event. The holiday has become an annual event in Lagos, allowing people to participate in festivals, rituals, and social events honoring Yoruba deities and ancestral legacies.
In a state government statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the celebration served as a reminder of the value of cultural preservation in a society that is becoming more and more modern.
“Isese Day is an opportunity to consider our rich history and ideals as Lagosians. Our people can celebrate our traditions, connect with their roots, and fortify unity in our diverse state on this day off from work,” he said.
Traditional leaders and cultural supporters, such as the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, have praised the governor’s decision, calling it a boost to Yoruba identity and spirituality.
The celebration is anticipated to include communal prayers, festivals, cultural performances, and tours of holy locations. Along with encouraging respect for one another across religious and cultural divides, the government also urged citizens to commemorate the event in a nonviolent manner.
Lagos further solidifies its position as a hub of Yoruba culture and heritage by formally commemorating Isese Day alongside states like Oyo and Osun.
