With 351 cases involving violations against children out of 446 human rights complaints submitted between April and June 2025, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano State has expressed alarm over the frequency of child rights abuses.
These numbers were revealed by Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, the NHRC Kano State Coordinator, during a press briefing in Kano.
He also disclosed that in addition to the child rights issues, the commission had recorded five cases pertaining to the right to life, 18 complaints about economic and social rights, and 19 cases of domestic abuse. Other grievances included allegations of witchcraft as well as different types of neglect and abuse.
Abdullahi pointed out that personal and matrimonial contexts, not state actors, were responsible for the majority of infractions. Government personnel were implicated in just seven of the total incidents that were disclosed.
He emphasized that any transgression within the family will eventually have an impact on society as a whole. “There can be no meaningful development in the larger society when there is egregious violation of rights within the family.”
Additionally, Abdullahi revealed that 341 of the complaints had been satisfactorily examined and resolved by the commission, while 105 instances were still ongoing.
