Chief Busari Abatan Adeleye, a community leader in Lagos, has filed a ₦50 million lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Lagos FID Commissioner Akanniyene Ezima, over alleged harassment, intimidation, and unlawful arrest.
Adeleye, the Baale of Adeleye Opeki Community in Abesan, Ipaja, alongside two family members, brought the case before the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja. They claim their arrest and detention on September 15–16, allegedly instigated by one Egonte Chukwuma Onyema, violated their fundamental rights under the 1999 Constitution.
They are asking the court to declare their arrest unlawful, stop further police harassment, and award ₦50 million in general damages and ₦5 million in aggravated damages.
According to a supporting affidavit, the Adeleye family asserts they are the rightful owners of Opeki Village land, backed by a 2022 court judgment. Despite this, Onyema allegedly continues to involve the police in attempts to reclaim the land, contrary to the court ruling.
As of now, the respondents have not filed any defence, and the court is yet to schedule a hearing.
