Following a recent flood disaster in Mokwa town, the seat of the Mokwa Local Government Area, the Niger State Government has disclosed that over 700 individuals are still unaccounted for.
This was revealed on Tuesday in Minna by Governor Umaru Bago, who was accompanied by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba. The delegation of condolences was led by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, who was the former Chief Security Officer of the late Gen. Sani Abacha.
The administration reports that over 3,000 households have been affected and that 207 deaths have been reported thus far. About 400 dwellings were also damaged by the water, while 283 homes and 50 stores were totally destroyed.
The administration was working with professional organizations to look into the underlying cause of the flooding, Governor Bago said, calling the issue a national calamity. Reports on the assessments are still pending.
The purpose of the visit, according to Major Al-Mustapha, who led a group of supporters from all over the nation, was to offer condolences and look into methods to stop a repeat. Additionally, he said, the delegation would meet with Mokwa’s traditional council.
In a related event, Governor Bago revealed that more than half of the people impacted by the May 29 flood were non-indigenous.
Speaking while receiving aid from Veritas University in Abuja, Bago, who was once more accompanied by his deputy, stated that victim documentation was still being completed and that bank account information was being gathered to enable the distribution of donated cash.
He pointed out that each impacted household is anticipated to get at least N1 million, even if the state’s accountant general has not yet revealed the whole amount of donations. Support will also be provided to host families who are housing displaced victims.
150 beds, mosquito repellents, and other relief supplies were delivered by the Veritas University team, which was led by Rev. Dr. Peter Bakwaph on behalf of the vice chancellor.
According to the university, some of its students lost loved ones in the tragedy.
