Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) can now produce between 4,000 and 5,000 passports within five hours—an achievement being recorded for the first time in 62 years. He made this known on Thursday after inspecting the newly established Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.
According to him, the new facility allows the NIS to process over 1,000 passports every hour, compared to the previous capacity of just 250–300 passports per day. He carried out the inspection alongside the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and the Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nanna Nandap.
“With this new infrastructure, which came at no cost to the government, the service has greatly boosted efficiency,” he explained. “Before now, passport production was limited and scattered across multiple centres worldwide. Today, with centralisation, NIS can produce up to 5,000 passports in under five working hours—a landmark development in its 62-year history.”
