Dele Momodu, a Peoples Democratic Party leader and two-term presidential candidate, has expressed concern that Nigerian democracy is in jeopardy.
The nation is returning to a civilian dictatorship, according to Momodu.
When he appeared on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief today, he made this claim.
As the nation gets ready to celebrate Democracy Day, he said, the situation is particularly depressing.
“I’m really glad that today falls on the eve of June 12 (Democracy Day), so that if we have any remaining conscience, we’ll realize that we have harmed this democracy,” he said.
The bottom line is that, as of June 12th, Nigeria is essentially back to civilian tyrants who don’t give a damn about your thoughts or feelings. Nigerians are starving.
Momodu accused government institutions and elected officials of disregarding the people, claiming that the leaders’ treatment of Nigerians is brazen and unabashed.
The boldness and effrontery of this group of politicians, whether in the presidency, legislative, or municipal government, is just unthinkable, he said, adding, “We have damaged this democracy, and I hope we haven’t damaged it beyond repair.”
He went on to say that those who lost their lives in the June 12 battle for Nigeria’s democracy would be devastated if they were still living today.
He said, “Everyone who suffered for this democracy, especially those who are now in heaven—they would be crying if they could see us.”
Momodu attributed the PDP’s crisis to Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory’s minister, who took control of the organization and sparked mayhem.
“That one individual, who ought to be occupied in Abuja, is deciding where the PDP presidential ticket should go in 2027 sounds absurd. Wike is repeating his actions from Rivers State, and it is obvious that he has the support of people in power.
“Where was Wike during the conflict on June 12? Then, who knew him? However, he now talks as though he is one of Nigeria’s founding fathers,” he said.
Additionally, he accused Wike of causing the crisis in Rivers State, which resulted in the declaration of a state of emergency.
“One man orchestrated and aggravated a major crisis of monumental dimension,” he added. A state of emergency had to be proclaimed just because he refused to leave quietly. It’s never happened before in Nigerian history.
He accused Wike of imposing his will on the party and called his activities a “coup” against the PDP.
“What he’s doing now is equivalent to staging a coup against the party that made him what he is today,” Momodu said. He lacks the moral authority to control the PDP’s course.
Momodu also responded to remarks made by President Bola Tinubu during the Abuja International Conference Center’s reopening.

Momodu, however, did not like this and thought it was unsettling.
“I heard the President call worried Nigerians “bystanders” and “busybodies.” In his own nation, who is a bystander? All due to Wike, a single individual.
Following the commissioning of a facility said to have cost more than ₦30 billion, Wike was dancing. Nigeria seems to have two presidents at the moment,” he grumbled.
Momodu declared he would never join the ruling APC, despite the problems in the PDP.
“I wouldn’t be talking to you like this if I wanted to join the APC,” he insisted. Like everyone else, I would be making excuses. However, I cannot remain in a room with a single man giving orders to adults who have dedicated their lives to serving Nigeria; my spirit is no longer with the PDP.
He concluded by cautioning that until Nigeria corrects its political structure, it is on the verge of becoming an autocratic nation.
“PDP is definitely contributing to its own issues,” he continued. However, individuals like Wike are gravely regressing us by acting with impunity.
