Citing recent wage increases in Imo and Ebonyi states as well as growing living expenses, the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, has called for a new minimum wage of N150,000 for workers in the state.
Funmi Sesi, the state NLC chairperson, made the demand on Thursday in reaction to the two states’ upward wage review.
Sesi claimed that because the cost of housing, transportation, food, and utilities has increased in the state, Lagos workers, who currently receive the minimum wage of N85,000.
The time has come for Lagos’ minimum wage to be raised. She remarked, “At least someone has opened the space and taken the bull by the horns.”
She also emphasized that no one could hold Governor Sanwo-Olu responsible if he implemented a higher wage for Lagos workers, emphasizing that they should be paid more and have decent working conditions that are in line with the city’s economic realities.
The head of the State NLC was hopeful that all state governments would follow Imo’s and Ebonyi’s example.
