The South-East leadership has been blamed by the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization for the Ndigbo people’s inability to participate fully in the recently concluded online voter registration drive by the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC.
Ohanaeze stated that after conducting a comprehensive internal investigation into the Southeast region’s poor performance, they feel obliged to tell the Igbo people the truth.
According to the pan-Igbo group, the numbers are alarming and extremely worrisome. Ohanaeze claims that 1,998 new voter registrations were made throughout the Southeast region during the one-week online registration period, which ran from August 18 to August 25, 2025.
According to a statement released to journalists in Abakaliki on Monday by Chief Thompson Ohia and the factional Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the meager amount is in sharp contrast to the 1.3 million Nigerians who are officially registered nationwide.
The statement included the following excerpt: “The North-Central region registered 250,218 new voters, while the Southwest region registered an astounding 848,359 new voters. For the Southeast, these numbers reflect a significant and intolerable underperformance.
Therefore, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, motivated by an unwavering dedication to the future and well-being of Ndigbo, issues this imperative: During the ongoing INEC in-person voter registration exercise, every eligible Igbo voter must register without hesitation.
