According to Time Magazine’s annual ranking, Professor Christian Happi of Redeemer’s University in Ede, Osun, is one of the top 100 influential people in the world.
Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, the university’s Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, made this announcement on Thursday in Osogbo.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Happi is a professor of Molecular Biology and Genomics of Infectious Diseases.
The announcement added that Happi was listed with global leaders, scientists, artists, and changemakers who were changing the world’s future
The statement claims that among other people, Happi is ranked with Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Muhammad Yunus, Duma Boko, Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Serena Williams, and J.D. Vance.
According to the announcement, Happi, the founding director of the university’s Institute of Genomics and Global Health, has spent more than ten years spearheading groundbreaking research in infectious disease genomics breakthroughs for real-time outbreak response in Africa.
According to the report, he successfully contained the outbreak in 2014 by collaborating closely with Nigerian health authorities and confirming the country’s first Ebola case.Within 48 hours of obtaining the material, he performed the first SARS-CoV-2 viral sequence in Africa using next-generation sequencing technology during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“His work has saved lives, informed global public health strategies, and contributed to developing diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines, among others,” it read.
In his remarks, Happi said that the recognition was a personal milestone and moment of pride for the university and Nigeria as a whole.
“This TIME100 recognition is a personal milestone and a moment of pride for IGH, Redeemer’s University, Ede, Nigeria, and academic and research institutions across the African continent.
“It shines a global spotlight on African scientists and institutions’ vital role in addressing some of the world’s most urgent health challenges,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Shadrach Akindele, congratulated Happi on the achievement.
Akindele said that the recognition was not just a reward but an indicator that his work ghad ained global acceptance.
