As the state gets ready for the 2026 governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Osun State chapter has urged the Nigeria Police Force to maintain its neutrality.
Sunday Bisi, the PDP’s State Chairman, expressed his concern about what he called a concerning pattern of PDP member arrests and detentions in a statement released Monday in Osogbo. He also praised the professionalism of the State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police. The party claims that the pattern raises the possibility of collusion between the APC, the All Progressives Congress, and some police officers.
Additionally, the PDP claimed that while similar complaints from the PDP received little to no attention, petitions filed by APC members were being handled with excessive urgency.
The party further claimed that rather than acting as unbiased investigators in disputes between the two parties, the Police frequently seemed to act as complainants on behalf of APC petitioners.
According to the statement, “the Police primarily designated themselves as the complainant against the detained PDP members and proceeded to initiate court action rather than calling the two complainants together.”
The PDP also voiced concern about the fact that these operations were often started from the Abuja Police Force Headquarters, with occasional attempts to move PDP members who had been arrested to the Federal Capital Territory.
The party called on police authorities to address the issue before it gets worse, revealing that over four such incidents had happened in the last two weeks.
“We have complete faith in the impartiality and expertise of the State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police. The statement pointed out that the things we listed above might just be isolated incidents or the deeds of a few junior officers.
