The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has nullified the recent state congress in Cross River and has instead inaugurated a Caretaker Committee to oversee party affairs in the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the NWC cited inconsistencies in official communication and the expiration of the existing State Executive Committee’s tenure as reasons for the move.
Despite a letter from the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, indicating the congress would go ahead on September 27, PDP Chairman Umar Damagum had earlier informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its postponement. Ologunagba clarified that no legitimate congress actually occurred in Cross River.
To fill the leadership vacuum, the party has set up a Caretaker Committee led by Bassey Eko Ewa as Chairman and Bassey Joseph as Acting Secretary. The committee will manage party affairs for a maximum of three months, or until a new executive committee is elected.
The NWC called on party members in the state to remain united and committed to the PDP’s progress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
