Peter Obi criticizes the Rivers LG poll as “a mockery of democracy.”

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the general elections of 2023, has called the recently finished Rivers State Local Governments election a “mockery of democracy.”

Late on Sunday, Obi posted on his official X handle, saying that the behavior of the group was a double tragedy for the nation’s democracy because it was rascality taken too far.

He claims that when an illegally appointed Sole Administrator holds an election that ought to give the people more power, it is not democracy but rather a flagrant violation of its fundamental principles.

The former governor of Anambra state went on to say that such acts are morally repugnant, legally untenable, and unconstitutional.

He went on to say that the acts convey the perilous idea that the rule of law can be disregarded at the whim of the powerful.

However, the fact that legitimacy cannot arise from illegality is unassailable. Any building built on a foundation of lawlessness poses a threat to the populace as well as the state.
