The rising number of security officer killings nationwide has alarmed Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the most recent general election. Obi cautioned that without sufficient assistance for their families, Nigeria cannot keep losing men in uniform.
The former governor of Anambra state bemoaned the frequent deaths of soldiers, police officers, members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and vigilantes while performing their duties in a statement that was uploaded on his X handle on Tuesday.
He urged the government to better equip and motivate security personnel in order to prioritize security as the cornerstone of governance.
Emphasizing that it was not an act of charity but rather justice for those who gave their lives for the country, Obi also called for just compensation and ongoing support for the families of fallen heroes.
In a statement titled “Protecting our Security Operatives,” he said: “The reported tragic killings of our security personnel over the past few weeks have sent the nation into yet another state of mourning. Our brave police officers, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps members, our valiant soldiers, and even neighborhood vigilantes are all victims.
“The safety and stability of our beloved country have been sacrificed by our men and women in uniform, who have paid the ultimate price while performing their duties.
These frequent murders ought to act as a warning to us leaders to better train and inspire our security personnel. Now, security needs to be the cornerstone of governance. Our commitment to creating a Nigeria where no one’s life is worthless—not even that of our security personnel or their families—should be strengthened by the memory of our fallen heroes. Nigeria cannot keep abandoning its soldiers’ families while burying them in uniform. Making sure that the spouses, kids, and parents of these fallen heroes receive just compensation and support is a duty that our government must take on.
“That’s the least a thankful country can offer. For those who sacrificed their lives so that the rest of us could live, it is justice, not charity.
“May the souls of all fallen heroes rest in eternal peace.” We will always remember your patriotism and sacrifice. You are not alone, families who have been left behind. May God keep giving you courage and consolation.
