Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the general elections of 2023, has bemoaned the new five percent tax on the sale of all refined fossil fuels, including gasoline and diesel.
Late on Wednesday, Obi claimed in a post on his official X handle that the government had increased the burden on Nigerians rather than lessened it.
According to the former governor of Anambra State, the 5% fuel tax ought to have been postponed until Nigerians started to notice real improvements in their lives as a result of all the numerous promises made by President Bola Tinubu.
At a time when millions of Nigerians can barely afford the cost of transportation, they will have to pay a five percent tax when purchasing their regular fuel or diesel.
Just yesterday, the president boasted that Nigeria had reached its annual revenue goal. However, the government puts more strain on Nigerians rather than lessening their suffering.
With prices rising from roughly N230 to N450, even the so-called alternative, CNG, has become unaffordable, and the promised subsidies have discreetly disappeared.
