Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwon, is confident that Plateau State will continue to be a stronghold for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even if Governor Caleb Mutfwang switches to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to run in the 2027 governorship election.
There have been widespread rumors that Mutfwang might leave the PDP for the APC ahead of the 2027 polls. However, Mwadkwon, who previously represented Plateau North Senatorial District before being removed by an Appeal Court ruling, said that even if this happens, the APC would not pose a significant threat, as Plateau would remain a PDP state.
Speaking to select journalists in Jos on Thursday, the former senator also dismissed claims that Mutfwang is among four PDP governors planning to defect to the APC, echoing the governor’s own denials of such rumors.
“Plateau is always a PDP state, and whether the governor leaves the party or not, the people of the state know that their loyalty to the PDP is unmatched,” Mwadkwon said.
He added that even if Governor Mutfwang decides to contest under a different party, the PDP will find a strong candidate to succeed him and secure victory. He encouraged Mutfwang to stay with the PDP, saying it is the best platform for his interests.
“The Plateau State Governor has publicly denied plans to join the APC multiple times; I don’t believe he intends to. Despite repeated appeals, he has stood firm on this matter,” Mwadkwon concluded.
