The House of Representatives has approved an amendment to the Electoral Act mandating the immediate electronic transmission of polling unit results to the IReV portal to ensure greater transparency. Unlike the 2022 legislation, which made such transmission discretionary, the new Clause 60(3) requires presiding officers to upload results in real time once official forms are signed and stamped. This reform aims to prevent the technical delays and glitches witnessed during the 2023 elections. Additionally, the House has formally established the BVAS as the mandatory accreditation tool under Clause 47(2), stipulating that if the device fails and cannot be replaced, the affected election must be canceled and rescheduled within 24 hours. Committee Chairman Adebayo Balogun noted that these changes address critical legal gaps, and the bill now moves toward Senate alignment and presidential approval ahead of the 2027 general elections.
