Security agencies are urged by ASUU to find the Yelwata murders.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (ASUU-MOAUM), has urged security authorities to find the murderers in the wake of the Yelwata massacre in Benue State.

During a coordinated attack on the village, suspected armed herders are said to have killed some 200 people in Yelwata during the penultimate weekend.

“The union strongly condemned the attack and urged the government to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice without delay,” said Comrades Ali Sule Ako, the organization’s chairperson, and Daniel Chile, its secretary, in a statement released on Tuesday.

The union expressed deep concern about the incessant attacks on Benue communities and warned that if the government fails to stop the violence, it poses grave risks to food security not only in the state but across the country.

ASUU-MOAUM urged both the Federal and State Governments to live up to their constitutional responsibility of securing the lives and property of all Nigerians, especially those in rural and vulnerable areas.

In order to stop additional killing, it also urged the country’s security forces to act swiftly, diligently, and fairly, stating that those accountable for the horrible atrocities committed in Benue State must be found and prosecuted right now.

In addition to calling for prompt humanitarian assistance and the implementation of successful resettlement programs to facilitate the safe return and rehabilitation of displaced persons, the union also expressed sympathy with the families and communities impacted by the attacks, especially in Yelwata.
