Senator Seriake Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, has maintained that Nigeria’s federal government has been grounded.
Dickson made this claim at Tuesday’s plenary session when discussing the government’s failure to pay contractors.
He claims that in the run-up to the general elections in 2027, the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, is preoccupied with politics and accepting defectors from all over the nation.
The Senator addressed the National Assembly’s floor during Tuesday’s plenary.
It’s obvious that nobody is happy with the state of affairs we’re in. I came in this morning, Mr. President, to speak with the chairman of our collaboration and the chairman of finance. If it is feasible, I would want to discuss this on the floor. I was unaware that this issue was scheduled for hearing,” Dickson stated.
The government has grounded because of the influx of complaints, which means that contractors who have completed their work and committed their resources cannot be paid. Additionally, the benefit of the budget that we all took the time to draft and approve has not reached the people, and you guessed it—we’re talking about the capital component.
“Maybe there is too much preoccupation with politics and 2027.
“Maybe there is too much concentration on receiving defectors across the country.
“The business of the Nigerian people to which we were all elected all of us and the president of the Federal Republic, is not moving forward,” he complained.
Numerous contractors working on projects for the federal government’s ministries, departments, and organizations have reportedly not received payment since October 2024.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Yemi Cardoso, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and other high-ranking government officials were therefore called before the House of Representatives on May 8th to discuss the situation.
