In eight events at the upcoming 2025 World Athletics Championships, seven Nigerian athletes have guaranteed their spots.
Tokyo will host the 2025 World Athletics Championships from September 13–21. With these competitors hoping to win Nigeria’s first medal since Tobi Amusan’s historic gold in Oregon in 2022, it should be a remarkable display of athletic prowess.
Nigeria’s elite athletes will join over 2,000 competitors from around 200 countries for this year’s edition of the tournament. This year marks the 20th version of the Championships and it is the second time Tokyo is hosting it, the first being in 1991.
Since the start of the qualification procedure last year, 1,062 qualified athletes have been welcomed into the international athletic community. With numerous competitors earning automatic qualification in a variety of sports, Nigeria’s journey to Tokyo has been characterized by outstanding results.
The Nigerian athletes listed below are eligible to compete at the 2025 World Athletics Championships: 1. Tobi Amusan
Tobi Amusan, the current world record holder, will participate in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with the goal of reclaiming her championship from Danielle Williams, the current champion.
During the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, Amusan became the first athlete from Nigeria to win a gold medal.
She proved her incredible potential and established herself as a leading medal contender in 2025 with her recent qualification on August 7, 2024, during the Paris Olympics, when she recorded an incredible 12.49 seconds, far below the automatic threshold of 12.73 seconds.
2. Favor Ofili
On August 5, 2024, during the Olympics in Paris, Favour Ofili qualified for the women’s 200-meter event with a strong time of 22.05 seconds, easily beating the previous record of 22.57 seconds.
She has demonstrated tremendous growth and perseverance as a silver medallist in the Commonwealth Games, particularly after encountering difficulties with her early Olympic entry. She is a formidable contender for medals in Tokyo because of her steady performances.
