Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has publicly warned Nigerians living abroad not to believe the recent positive assessment of the country made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling Akpabio’s statement “deceptive and untrue.”
In a post on his X handle, Shehu accused the Senate President of peddling “political propaganda” by painting a false picture of progress and stability. Shehu painted a stark counter-picture, citing massive challenges including:139 million Nigerians facing hunger,60 million jobless youths,Over 30 million children suffering from severe malnutrition.

He bluntly advised Nigerians in the diaspora: “Come back home at your own risk.” Shehu concluded that Nigerian leaders have normalized lying and deception as a “permanent culture,” urging those abroad to ignore political speeches that fail to reflect the severe poverty and unemployment facing the majority of citizens.
