Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the immediate arrest of members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade (OCHA Brigade) involved in the shooting near Emeka Offor Plaza in Onitsha Main Market.
According to a statement from the state’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, while the governor directed that the officers be handed over to the police for prosecution, he assured that medical care for the injured would be fully provided.
According to BASEMEDIA, the OCHA Brigade, a task force established to enforce environmental and sanitation laws, has frequently been accused of harassment, extortion, and excessive force.
OCHA Brigade members reportedly opened fire during enforcement operations on Tuesday, escalating tensions and causing panic in the busy commercial center. Some victims, including a pregnant woman, were allegedly captured on camera, according to witnesses.
The government was fully aware of the situation at Onitsha Main Market, Mefor said, confirming the incident.
“We value the police’s prompt action, which has brought peace and order back to the area. The government will make sure that all necessary steps are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future, and an investigation into the incident has begun.Unfortunately, Miss Chinwe Igwe, one of the victims, was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her remains have been placed in the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy. The commissioner stated that the other victims are presently undergoing treatment and are reacting favorably.
