The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) criticized Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, for his delayed reaction to the United States’ recent designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”
APC spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, accused Obi of exploiting a sensitive national issue for political gain instead of acting like a statesman. The party argued that Obi’s initial “deafening silence” only ended due to public pressure, suggesting his response was not driven by “patriotic instinct” but by a fear of exposing his “double standards.”
The APC labeled Obi’s eventual statement as “too little, too late, and too predictable,” criticizing it for lacking sincerity, urgency, and a unifying spirit. Oladejo asserted that a true national leader would not require public reminders when the nation’s image is at stake, defining Obi’s action as reactive, not proactive leadership.
The party further alleged that Obi “thrives politically when Nigeria faces challenges,” accusing him of viewing national difficulties as opportunities for his “political resurrection,” which the APC dismissed as “sour politics born from electoral heartbreak.”
Defending the current administration, the APC stated that President Bola Tinubu is confronting inherited security challenges with courage and strategy, including strengthening military command and tackling the economic roots of insecurity.
The APC urged Obi to choose between “standing with Nigeria or persisting in political desperation.” The statement concluded by asking the public to stay focused on the “Renewed Hope agenda” and reject those who “profit politically from national difficulty.”
