Due to outstanding issues that affect non-academic staff in universities, the Federal Government has been given a seven-day notice to go on strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU). The two unions expressed their disapproval of the “unjust” distribution of earned allowances to university employees, the failure to pay unpaid allowances, and other unresolved issues in a letter dated September 12, 2025.
The letter reminded Minister of Education Tunji Alausa of a June 18, 2025, letter from the Joint Action Committee, or JAC, of NASU and SSANU. It was signed by SSANU President Muhammad Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi. The urgent need for intervention in unresolved labor issues impacting their members was underlined in the letter.
The unions say the letter prompted the Minister to meet with the NASU and SSANU JAC on July 4, 2025, to discuss the issues brought up.
The statement stated that the letter’s main concerns were the following: “Unfair Distribution of N50 Billion Earned Allowances; Non-Payment of Outstanding Withheld Salaries and 25/35% Salary Increments; and Renegotiation of Year 2009 FGN and NASU/SSANU Agreements.”The unions argued that if the Federal Government does not respond to their agitations within seven days of Monday, September 15, 2025, they will be forced to use a number of legal industrial actions, including strikes, to make their demands known.
