During a clearance operation in the Lake Chad Basin, Nigerian military troops participating in Operation Hadin Kai have engaged in a heavy gunfight and killed at least ten Boko Haram militants.
The operation targeted terrorist enclaves along the Nigeria–Cameroon border between Rann and Gamboru Ngala, according to a statement issued by Major-General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations.
Troops from the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Hybrid Forces, and other security agencies collaborated on the campaign, which sought to drive out last members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.
According to Major-General Kangye, “the encounter took place during a combined operation strategically designed and executed to flush out remnants of BH/ISWAP terrorists operating within the border communities.”
After troops stormed the hideouts based on reliable intelligence, there was a fierce firefight that resulted in the terrorists being defeated.
A sizable stockpile of weapons and ammunition, including anti-aircraft rounds, was found by the forces and carried in for more technical examination.
Searches are still on to find further terrorist hideouts in the region and find potential escapees, Kangye added.
“To eradicate the remaining BH/ISWAP in the area, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have increased their operational pace in the Lake Chad Basin and other areas of Northern Borno in cooperation with the MNJTF, Hybrid Forces, and other security agencies,” the statement read.
