The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has been prohibited from detaining Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, the Archbishop of the Province of Niger and the Bishop of the Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion, by an Anambra High Court in Awka.
This came after Mr. B.E. Nwofor, SAN, the Archbishop’s attorney, filed an ex-parte motion to prevent the EFCC and its agents from acting until after additional court proceedings.
After reviewing the motion in light of the Fundamental Human Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, Section 46(1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 Constitution, and the court’s inherent jurisdiction, the presiding judge, Justice F.I. Aniukwu, issued the order. The court stated that until the parties have completely exchanged procedures regarding Motion on Notice No: A/1307M/2025 and the matter is heard or scheduled for hearing, the interim injunction will continue to be in force. The order will expire 21 days from September 9, 2025, if it is not renewed.
