The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has officially passed a bill designed to create a comprehensive legal framework for addressing climate change within the state.
Sponsored by Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, the legislation was passed on Monday. Speaker Danladi Jatau heralded the bill as a major step toward weaving environmental sustainability into all sectors of the state’s governance.
The key feature of the new law is the establishment of a Climate Change Advisory Committee, which will be chaired by the state governor. This committee will be responsible for coordinating policies, developing adaptation strategies, and guiding state agencies on all climate-related initiatives. The bill is now on its way to Governor Abdullahi Sule for his final assent—meaning Nasarawa is finally putting its climate strategy into law, rather than just into press releases.
