The Niger State House of Assembly has directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure that local government councils allocate 5 percent of their monthly allocation to the Local Government Education Authority, LGEA, for running costs.
The House stated that the decision aims to address the infrastructural challenges that public primary schools in the state face.
This position was reached in response to a motion moved by Muhammad Sani Idris, member of the Tafa constituency, urging the Niger State Government to prioritize the maintenance of structures in public primary schools.
“The current state of these schools is a reflection of the neglect they have suffered over the years,” Idris said, emphasizing the significance of preserving public primary schools in the state.
He maintained that giving LGEA 5% of the monthly budget would significantly help address the infrastructure issues that the schools are currently facing.
In accordance with Section 10 of the NSUBEB Law, the House unanimously approved all of the prayers, including instructing all LGs to form and establish the LGA and District Education Committee by allocating regular sitting allowances and providing the required operational support.
They urged the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board, or NSUBEB, to create and carry out a thorough routine maintenance program for all of the state’s public schools, clearly defining roles for the state, local governments, and community members.
In order to discuss the issues and determine appropriate ways to resolve them, the lawmakers also ordered the Education Committee and Local Government Committee to call a tripartite meeting that would include the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Education, NSUBEB, Local Government Education Councils, Secondary School Education Board, and LGEA.
The House Clerk, Mallam Farouq Umar Isah, was then instructed by Speaker Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji, who chaired the plenary, to forward the House’s resolution to the executive.
