The Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, has threatened to stage a nationwide demonstration in response to the country’s growing poverty, insecurity, and high cost of living crisis.
This was in response to a warning that Nigerian workers would no longer tolerate the country’s democracy and economy collapsing.
In a statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, and general secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC said that the over 700,000 people killed in Nigeria’s insecurity in a single year could only occur in war-torn countries.
It also warned that when farmers could not access their lands to farm, famine becomes a looming danger.
The Congress condemned what it called the government’s failure to secure lives and property and demanded immediate action.
“The time for talk shops and promises has passed; what is needed now are actions,” it warned.
NLC advised the government to impose a state of emergency on insecurity right away and direct security forces to deal mercilessly and decisively with criminals, particularly armed bandits and herders.
