As part of preventative steps to deal with floods during the state’s rainy season, the Oyo State Government said that it had dredged 11 rivers.
The PUNCH says that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency have forecast flooding in a number of states this year, including Oyo.
According to a statement issued Wednesday in the state capital of Ibadan by Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, the administration made the announcement at the Executive Council meeting that was held Tuesday at the Secretariat, Agodi, in Ibadan.
He added that in order to improve garbage collection in the municipality, the Ministry of Environment has been instructed to acquire additional compactor trucks.
“The council approved the immediate dredging of 11 flood-prone rivers across the state, including those in Iseyin, Oyo, Ibadan, Igbo Ora, Ogbomoso, and others, to protect lives and property,” Oyelade stated.
The commissioner added that in order to improve firefighting, rescue operations, and worker safety, the council has authorized the purchase of special and auxiliary firefighting equipment for the Oyo State Fire Service Agency.
Additionally, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources received approval to purchase compactor vehicles in order to increase the effectiveness of garbage collection. N690 million has been approved for these three projects.
