The Presidency claimed on Monday that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) originated the alleged “hoax” of Christian genocide in Nigeria starting in 2016. President Bola Tinubu’s spokesman, Daniel Bwala, made this disclosure during an interview on TVC’s Your View.

Bwala stated: “Since that IPOB started this thing as far back as 2016, amplifying the false narrative that there is a genocide against the Christians in Nigeria… Those that are killed are more of the Islamic faith than of the Christian faith.” He asserted that the government maintains its position that the perpetrators are simply “criminal elements,” and that the government does not profile the killings. Bwala contended that those who profile the killings have an agenda against the Nigerian state.
He repeated that this “whole hoax of Christian genocide started from IPOB,” citing an investigative report mirrored by Arise News that detailed IPOB amplifying this “false narrative” since 2016. He claimed this falsehood unfortunately reached US lawmakers, naming Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Randy Moore.
Bwala concluded that dialogue with the American government will help deepen understanding. He advised starting diplomatic conversation by finding shared interests to realize that areas of disagreement are minor, allowing a solution to be found.
