US President Donald Trump repeated his threat of a military operation in Nigeria over the killings of Christians, even after the Nigerian Presidency suggested a meeting to resolve the issue.
Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump addressed a question about deploying US troops or launching air strikes in Nigeria by replying, “Could be, I mean, a lot of things, I envisage a lot of things.” He justified the potential intervention by stating: “They’re killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers. We’re not going to allow that to happen.”
This followed Trump’s explosive Truth Social post on Saturday, where he warned that Christianity was “facing an existential threat” in Nigeria and stated he had asked the Pentagon to map out a potential attack plan. He warned that if Nigeria does not stop the killings, the US will attack, and “it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Bwala, spokesman for Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, responded on Sunday by emphasizing that Nigeria is America’s partner in the global fight against terrorism. Bwala affirmed that Nigeria welcomes US support to fight terrorism, provided that it “respects its territorial integrity.”
