Burnley needed to defeat third-place Sheffield United in order for Leeds to claim one of the two coveted automatic promotion berths. Fifth-placed Bristol City faced a setback as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Luton Town, who are fighting relegation. However, Bristol City managed to maintain their position just above Coventry City in the standings. Despite taking an early lead, Middlesbrough, who are now in seventh position, lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday, missing a great chance to get closer to the playoff candidates.
The rankings are close with two games remaining in the season: Middlesbrough is still in the hunt with 63 points, Coventry has 66, and Bristol City has 67.
With 63 and 62 points, respectively, Millwall and Blackburn are still in the running for playoff spots as the season draws to a close.
