Two secondary school principals have been sanctioned by the Ondo State Government for collecting illicit charges and items from students in public schools. In an interview with reporters in Akure on Tuesday, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, revealed the information.
Ajibefun claimed that the impacted principals were implicated in the purportedly unlawful fee collection, but he would not provide their names or the schools where they were employed.
He clarified that some parents had informed the ministry that certain principals were collecting items from their students that were not authorized and charging more than the authorized levies.
The commissioner bemoaned the practice of some principals and head teachers collecting levies from students that the government had not authorized.
In the past few days, we have sanctioned two principals. Students’ money was being illegally collected by the two principals. They began collecting money from the students even before classes resumed for the new term.
“We summoned them to the ministry, and they confessed because we’ve received credible information from parents, and when we confronted them with the allegations, they couldn’t deny.
“They have been questioned, and the penalty will be administered. It is to show them that we take our statements seriously and that this time is different,” Ajibefun stated.
