UCL: Gomez remembers Real Madrid

Real Madrid is trailing 3-0 heading into Wednesday night’s first second leg of their quarterfinal matchup in the Spanish capital. In the semi-finals of the 2011–12 Champions League, Gomez thought back to a match between Bayern Munich and a Real Madrid squad that featured Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bayern secured a 2-1 victory at home after the first game ended 2-1 at Allianz Arena. Real Madrid won the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, although the score remained the same. In an interview with Relevo prior to Real Madrid’s second leg home match against Arsenal, Gomez described how Real Madrid entered the game with a lot of energy.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace put Los Blancos ahead 2-0 less than fifteen minutes into the game. However, Arjen Robben’s perfectly executed spot kick in the 27th minute gave Bayern the equalizer. “They passed us like a train in the second leg against Madrid. “What the devil is going on here?” I’ve never experienced anything like that again because it was so intense.

When Alonso passed the ball to Cristiano or Di María, you couldn’t stop them because they were scoring goals. Fortunately for us, they relaxed after the 2-0 loss and we were able to resume the game. We received a penalty from them. Robben scored to make it 2-1 after Pepe fouled me, Gomez stated. After a penalty shootout, Bayern Munich advanced to the championship game with a 3-1 victory.
