The palace of Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, the supreme ruler of the Ebem Ohafia Ancient kingdom, and seven other locations are in danger of being swallowed by environmental issues in Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia LGA of Abia State, according to Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly Emmanuel Emeruwa.
To conduct an on-site assessment visit to the erosion areas, the Speaker ordered Kalu Mba Nwoke, the chairman of the House Committee on Environment, to take the lead.
The intervention came after the Publicity Secretary of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union, Ifeanyi Okali, issued an alarm and member Kalu Mba Nwoke, who represents Ohafia South, raised a matter of urgent significance before the House during a plenary session.
In order to create a thorough erosion management and intervention plan for Ebem and other impacted places, he assigned the Committee the responsibility of working with pertinent agencies.
Kalu Mba Nwoke, the representative for the Ohafia South constituency, presented the alarming condition to the Abia State House of Assembly. He warned that if prompt action is not taken, the erosion crisis in Ebem Ohafia might lead to a calamity.
The member from Ohafia South claimed that in addition to the endangered palace, the erosion has ruined five other locations, including Mben Hospital and the rear of the police divisional headquarters in Ebem Ohafia.
“The danger is increasing daily as these areas are collapsing quickly, particularly with the increasing rainfall.”
Nwoke warned the Abia parliament that if the erosion is not stopped, the entire town may be wiped out.
The issue has been forwarded to the Abia State House of Assembly’s environmental committee for legislative examination and on-site evaluation.
