Ali Koc, the president of Fenerbahce, has explained the reasoning for their decision to fire manager Jose Mourinho.
Koc claimed that Mourinho’s defensive football approach was no longer appropriate.
After just one year in charge, the former manager of Real Madrid and Manchester United was fired.
Following Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off loss to Benfica last month, Mourinho was fired.
Koc has now maintained that the team’s general approach, not only that match, was the reason for Mourinho’s firing.
“When we brought our coach in, we knew he was a defensive player,” Koc said to Hurriyet.
However, we discussed the necessity of playing with greater dominance towards the end of the season. Our genetic code is to score 99 goals and 99 points.
“It wasn’t an issue to be eliminated by Benfica, but the manner in which we were eliminated was unacceptable.”
This gave me hope that football would continue from the previous year.
