Some PDP stakeholders have made certain demands as the party gets ready for its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The group, which included former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, National Vice Chairman, South-South Dan Orbih, National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Nyesom Wike, among others, outlined requirements that must be fulfilled in order to keep the upcoming national convention from being declared invalid due to the disenfranchisement of “legitimate members of the party.”
The conditions were stated in a communiqué released following the parley and were presented at a meeting that took place in Abuja on Monday evening.
The group reiterated in the communique that, in keeping with the PDP’s longstanding traditions, leadership positions within the party must continue to be open, inclusive, and competitive while maintaining regional equity.
“After meeting to review the state of our great party and assess the critical issues leading to the upcoming National Convention, we, the Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), do hereby express our collective commitment to the principles of equity, justice, inclusivity, and the rule of law – values upon which the PDP was founded and upon which its survival depends,” the communique reads.As we get ready for the National Convention, we thought it necessary and convenient to make the following observations and communicate our demands to the party leadership and the National Working Committee (NWC) in the spirit of unity and progress, keeping in mind the party’s historical role as a guardian of Nigeria’s democratic aspirations.
The group noted in the communique that the PDP “stands at a defining crossroads where its ability to uphold fairness, respect constitutional processes, and reconcile internal disputes will determine its future relevance.”
Disenfranchisement, exclusion, or disregard for legitimate court rulings cannot serve as the foundation for that unity.
“That openness, equity, and respect for the rule of law, along with inclusivity, must be the cornerstones of a credible National Convention.”
