Wike on how he became a Nigerian democracy hero in 2023

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared himself the “hero of Nigeria’s democracy,” claiming credit for ensuring that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar lost the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Today on Thursday, Wike dismissed suggestions that former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, was the hero of the PDP’s 2022 convention. He argued that despite Tambuwal stepping down during the primaries and urging his supporters to back Atiku, the former vice president failed to gain significant support in Rivers State.

“Atiku didn’t even get 5% of the votes in Rivers in 2023, and I can assure you he won’t get 5% in 2027. His defeat will be even more resounding,” Wike said, adding that his role in blocking Atiku’s success made him the true hero of democracy.

The minister also criticized Atiku for repeatedly using claims of “hunger in Nigeria” as a justification for switching political parties. According to him, Atiku defected multiple times—from PDP to AC, back to PDP, then to APC, and again to ADC—always citing hunger as his reason.

“Each time Atiku wants to defect, he says ‘Nigerians are hungry’. He was vice president for eight years. What did he do to end the hunger then? Imagine such a character,” Wike remarked.
